About the Opportunity

As a Design Draftsperson at Austal, you will play a crucial role within the Design and Engineering team, contributing directly to the success of shipbuilding and sustainment programs for Australia’s defence and commercial fleet. You will be responsible for the production of technical documentation and 3D models to support the design, construction, and maintenance of high-performance vessels.


Detailed Job Responsibilities

  • Technical Drafting and Modelling:
    Produce accurate 2D drawings and 3D models in compliance with project specifications, company standards, and industry regulations.
  • Documentation Management:
    Ensure that all deliverables meet procedural and auditable documentation requirements, maintaining full traceability.
  • Cross-functional Communication:
    Collaborate closely with engineers, project managers, production teams, and external stakeholders to clarify design requirements and resolve issues.
  • Quality Assurance:
    Maintain high levels of accuracy and attention to detail to ensure construction deliverables are achieved without compromise.
  • Continuous Improvement:
    Proactively identify opportunities for design enhancements, process efficiencies, and contribute to innovation initiatives within the team.
  • Compliance and Standards Adherence:
    Apply knowledge of regulatory body rules (e.g., Lloyd’s Register, DNV) and ensure designs meet the necessary marine safety and construction regulations.
  • Data Management:
    Follow best practices in the management of design data, drawings, and associated documents within the company’s document control systems.
  • Mentoring and Collaboration:
    Actively engage with and support junior draftspersons and team members, sharing expertise and fostering a collaborative work environment.

Qualifications and Skills Required

Essential

  • Formal Qualifications:
    Tertiary qualification in Drafting/Design or equivalent professional experience.
  • Software Proficiency:
    Advanced skills in CAD/modelling software, particularly AutoCAD, Autodesk Inventor, or ShipConstructor.
  • 3D Modelling Expertise:
    Strong skills in creating and manipulating complex 3D models.
  • Technical Knowledge:
    Basic understanding of materials and their compatibility in a marine environment.
  • Document and Data Management:
    Good understanding of data/document management principles and procedures.
  • Microsoft Office Proficiency:
    Competency with Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint.

Desirable

  • Experience with ShipConstructor software.
  • Background in Structural, Electrical, or Mechanical/Piping modelling.
  • Previous drafting/modelling experience within the marine industry.
  • Knowledge of naval and commercial vessel regulations and compliance standards.
  • Familiarity with Defence Industry project requirements.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Applicants must be Australian Citizens.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Baseline Security Clearance issued by the Australian Department of Defence.
